What is Affogato?
Affogato, an Italian word meaning "drowned," is a delightful dessert that beautifully marries the worlds of coffee and gelato. This simple yet luxurious treat consists of a scoop of creamy, high-quality vanilla gelato or ice cream "drowned" in a hot shot of freshly brewed espresso. The contrast between the hot, intense espresso and the cold, sweet gelato creates a harmonious blend of flavors and textures, making affogato a favorite indulgence for coffee lovers and dessert enthusiasts alike. Perfect as a quick after-dinner treat or a sophisticated dessert, affogato is both comforting and elegant, capturing the essence of Italian culinary tradition in every spoonful. Here are the ingredients for a classic affogato recipe.
CLASSIC AFFOGATO RECIPE Ingredients:
2 scoops of high-quality vanilla gelato or ice cream
1 shot of freshly brewed espresso
Optional: a splash of amaretto liqueur
Optional: chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish
Instructions:
Prepare the Espresso: Brew a fresh shot of espresso. If you don't have an espresso machine, you can use a strong coffee or a Moka pot to make a concentrated coffee.
Scoop the Gelato: Place 2 generous scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream into a chilled glass or bowl.
Pour the Espresso: Immediately pour the hot espresso shot over the gelato. The heat from the espresso will start to melt the gelato, creating a delicious creamy mixture.
Add Extras (Optional): For an extra kick, add a splash of amaretto liqueur over the gelato and espresso. Garnish with chocolate shavings or a light dusting of cocoa powder if desired.
Serve Immediately: Serve the affogato immediately, as it’s best enjoyed when the gelato is slightly melted and mixed with the espresso.
Enjoy your delicious and easy-to-make affogato!
